SDO Batanes resharpens school leaders on writing research proposals years after stagnation, levels up to working smart

After four years of drought for trainings, SDO Batanes spearheaded a three-day training workshop on research proposal writing for school leaders and levels up to working smart in terms of research writing.

Around 35 Education Program Supervisors and School Heads attended the training workshop on Basic Education Research Proposal Writing which began on January 18 under the initiative of the School Governance and Operations Division- Research Unit.

Glyza Mae Valiente, Education Program Specialist II for HRD and Division Research Focal Person, said that the training aimed at enhancing the capacity of the participants in writing basic and producing quality research proposals which are expected to be implemented this calendar year.

Ang gusto kasi natin makapagproduce tayo ng mga quality research proposal na i-iimplement ng mga supervisors and principals natin this year dahil ang research ay isa sa mga mandato nila. Kaya tutulungan natin sila na magawa iyon through this training, Valiente said.

This is the first training for EPS and School Heads following their last training four years ago when the research unit prioritized extending research in other personnel mandated to conduct research in the previous years.

Four years ago na kasi yung huling training para sa mga EPS and SH natin so since mga educational leaders sila, I believe isa sila dapat sa mga mangunang mag-level up in terms of research, Valiente added.

Valiente also stressed that after a year of implementation of their research, another training will be conducted for the same participants that will then focus on the completion writing of their research.

Once na ma-evaluate natin ang proposal ninyo at ma-approve, ii-implement nyo po ito at ang data na makukuha ninyo sa research ninyo will be our input for another training po ninyo sa completion writing come 2023 para makumpleto natin yung dalawang phases, Valiente stressed to the participants during the opening program.

The training is expected to harvest at least 30 research proposals which are aligned to the research agenda of DepED for the betterment of learning and teaching in the new normal.

Partnership in research training

Aside from Valiente as learning facilitator, she also invited external resource person and other in-house learning facilitators.

The presence of the external and internal facilitators was aimed at strengthening research partnerships between DepEd Batanes and other institutions.

Invited external trainer was Dr. Ferdinand Bulusan, Associate Professor II of the Batanes State College while the in-house facilitators were- Jeffrey Medina, School Principal I of Sabtang National School of Fisheries and Walden Habana, Master Teacher I of Batanes National Science High School.

Bulusan facilitated majority of the sessions in the training that mainly focused on how to enhance the quality of their research papers. Bulusan is an internationally published researcher and trainer on research writing.

In addition to the three-day training on proposal writing, a Qualitative Research is calendared next month for the Division Research Technical Working Group where Bulusan is set to be the resource person.

Bulusan reassured SDO Batanes and the researchers, that he will always be there ready to extend his help.

Rest assured, you will always get a sure nod when you call me out because you can certainly count on me and you can always count me in, Bulusan mentioned in an online facebook post dedicated for the recently conducted training.

Meanwhile, Medina and Habana have bee lonng-time partners of the SDO Research Unit in advocating research within the field. Medina and Habana focused on the method section of the research during the training. They have been providing trainings in research division wide and in the school level.

Trained to working smart

Apart from capacitating the researchers in writing their proposals, Bulusan exposed the researchers to online platforms where the school leaders can access quality literature as reference for their research topics.

Bulusan also taught them up-to-date trends in quality assuring researchers proposals and in managing their research writing.

He taught the participants various techniques in the efficient use of online and offline platforms that will help them save time and work efficiently in the writing process.

Among the online sites introduced to the participants are the Google Scholar, ERIC, and Taylor and Francis Online which can be accessed freely by the participants.

Bulusan also introduced his framework called The Dictatorship of the Gap which has particularly helped the researcher in identifying their objectives and research questions based from the gap/s identified.

Additionally, he also shared the Literature Matrix which simplifies the process of doing the review of related literature.

Preparing for the Regional Planning Conference

Aside from its objective to enhance the capacity of the participants and produce quality research proposals, Valiente also emphasized that the training aims to bring quality outputs in the Regional Planning Conference slated in November.

After ng evaluation ng mga outputs natin sa training na through the Division Planning and Research Conference sa April, pipili tayo doon ng mga entries natin for Basic Research Proposal Category para sa Regional Planning Conference which is in November,

The Regional Planning Conference is an annual activity of DepEd Regional Office No. 2  where research outputs are entered to various contested categories.

Carmencita Adami, Education Program Supervisor and among the participants thanked the facilitators in behalf of the other participants for teaching them how to do things easier.

We are grateful, thankful for the learnings acquired and making us know there is so much to learn and many easier ways to do research, Adami said during the closing program of the training.
